Since 2018 we have been tackling this issue in Nepal through our AMR (Drug Resistant Infection) Awareness Programme, working with various stakeholders and communities to develop sustainable solutions. Our aims are to:
- increase awareness of antimicrobial resistance in the user population
- encourage the change of behaviour towards medically appropriate use of antibiotics.
The programme has several strands:
- ‘AMR Diaries’ with pharmacists in Lalitpur, Kathmandu
- Science Theatre: ‘Bichara Antibiotics – a play about antimicrobial resistance’
- Community events to mark World Antimicrobial Awareness Week
- Singing the Songs of Antibiotics.
On World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2022, we organised a song competition between community health volunteers. Songs from Ward number 9 of Lalitpur Metropolitan City secured first position in the competition, whereas the song from Ward 13 secured second position. These 2 songs have now been filmed into videos and being used during public engagement events in community and schools. These songs were written, composed and sung by the community members themselves. We are thankful to everyone who enthusiastically were engaged in the event.
