Dr Marc Choisy, PhD is interested in developing mathematical models to understand the within-host and between-host dynamics of infectious diseases and to fit these models to real data. These models help understand biological mechanisms and contribute to decision-making on the prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Research Interest

  • Sero-surveillance and vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD): He develops models to optimise vaccine policies. These models are based on data generated by a national sero-surveillance system based on 20 hospitals across Vietnam that he co-leads with Professor Rogier van Doorn.
  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR): He is interested in (i) the optimisation of empirical treatments, (ii) the interactions between AMR and VPD, and (iii) the relationship between AMR and AMU (antimicrobial usage), co-evolution between virulence and resistance. He collaborates with OUCRU Hanoi (Professor Rogier van Doorn) on a national hospital-based surveillance system and the Molecular Epidemiology group (Dr Pham Thanh Duy) on Klebsiella pneumonia.
  • Climate change and infectious diseases: He uses machine-learning forecasting-based approaches to understand the effects of environmental and climatic variables on the epidemiology of infectious diseases, including dengue fever, respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases.
  • Covid-19: He develops models to mitigate the COVID-19 burden on hospital intensive care units and optimise vaccine policies. He collaborates closely with Dr Pham Quang Thai from the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in Hanoi.
