Background | The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU; www.oucru.org) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal. In Vietnam, we are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. OUCRU As a Wellcome Trust Africa Asia Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991. OUCRU’s vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases. Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals where we work, and to the countries as a whole where we operate: Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal. All work is intended not only to benefit the patients seen daily at our host hospitals, but also to help improve patient care. The biostatistics group currently consists of one research assistant, two postdocs and the group head (https://www.oucru.org/research/biostatistics/). They support the researchers at OUCRU in the design and statistical analysis of clinical trials and medical and epidemiological studies based on observational data. They also perform research on statistical methods that are relevant for the studies that are performed at OUCRU. |
Job summary | Your main task will be to provide support on the design of, and perform analyses for the AWaRe1 trial (https://www.oucru.org/project/aware-1/). This trial will test whether a newly developed intervention improves the effectiveness of antibiotic use for respiratory infections in primary healthcare settings. Effectiveness of antibiotic use is evaluated based on the WHO AWaRe system. The design is a cluster-randomized trial, with primary healthcare centers as clusters. You will also be involved in the other research and teaching activities of the biostatistics group. |
Key responsibilities and tasks | – Write the statistical analysis plan and perform the analyses for the AwaRe1 trial – Support and advise on statistical issues for the other workstreams within the AwaRe1 project – Advise and support PhD students and other researchers at OUCRU in the writing of research proposals and study protocols and in their statistical analyses – Perform sample size calculations – Support the courses Computing in R and Introduction to Medical Statistics – Contribute to methodological research in biostatistics We are looking for a person who can understand, apply and develop novel statistical methods to answer our research questions. He/she initially works under supervision of the head of the biostatistics group, but is expected to develop into an independent researcher. |
Selection criteria | Essential – PhD in mathematics, statistics or a closely related quantitative discipline. – A solid understanding of and experience with statistical analyses – Experience with programming in R – Excellent written and spoken language skills in English and Vietnamese – Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues to researchers with a different background – Analytical problem-solving skills and attention to detail – Self-initiative and willingness to learn and develop Desired – Familiarity with randomized controlled trials – Experience with research in a medical environment – Ability to contribute to the methodological development of novel approaches for designing and analyzing clinical and epidemiological studies |
Benefits | – Contracted salary ranges: * Point: 11 – 15 * Scale: $ 1,990 – $ 2,422 gross per month – Optional insurance: In-patient and out-patient medical coverage; Personal accident insurance coverage – Two months salary for annual bonus and clothes – Annual leave 18 days/year for the first year, a maximum of 30 days – Other responsibilities and benefits are based on Viet Nam Labor Law. |
